When Mahatma Gandhi said "we must be the change we want to see on the planet," he may not have realized how many people would be inspired by his brave words. If anyone had the right to say such a thing, it was Mahatma Gandhi. He was so determined to make his country free of British rule that he was willing to go through torture, dangers, and severe poverty just to bring improvements to the world. Although his words have been a little diluted by their worldwide recognition, they still strike people today. As success quotes go, it is one of the more encouraging ones. Particularly to individuals who enjoy inspirational and success quotes, it is powerful. Even the tacky "be the change" bumper stickers may, at times, make people stop and think, as all the best success quotes do.
Stopping and thinking, though, was not all that Gandhi had in mind. Just contemplating changing the world does not truly do anything to help anybody. In order to be the change, you must be willing to give up everything including your feeling of identity. Most of the leaders, youthful and old, who are really working to make the world a greater place aren't very flashy about it. The true heroes are often unknown. Although everyone has heard of Mahatma Gandhi, few people are aware of many of the additional activists who were also attempting to get the British out of India. They were content to work in obscurity, hoping that someday their aspirations of freedom would come true.
It does not matter what you are striving for. If it is imperative enough for you to surrender a safe, secure life to work for change, it has value. Don't fret about being recognized for what you do. It is sufficient to "be the change" and let the world feel your love.
