Most men kept their hair short as that was the style back then. After the hair cut was a shave. This wasn't a shave as we envision today, with foam from a can and a synthetic disposable razor. Rather, the lather was put on with a badger brush and a straight razor was used. It looks scary, but it is the smoothest shave you can ever be given. After the shave was the hot towel that every time felt so enjoyable.
The men would principally banter about baseball or politics, though the subject of women would come up often. It was a time to relax and get to know everyone a bit better. Today, when you get a haircut the chatting is kept to a minimum and you commonly try to get out as soon as you can.
